Cherry Laurel Hedge
Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia
Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia', also known as Common Laurel, is one of the UK's most popular evergreen hedging plants. Its large, glossy green leaves and fast, dense growth make it an excellent choice for privacy screening, garden boundaries and medium to tall hedges.
Once established, Cherry Laurel typically grows around 30–60cm per year, depending on growing conditions, and responds well to regular trimming. It is a robust and versatile hedging plant suitable for a wide range of UK gardens, with bare root, pot grown, root balled and instant hedging options available.

Choosing your Cherry Laurel hedge plants
Choose your plants around the height of screening you need, your planting date and your budget. Compare the sizes and root types above before working out the quantity for your boundary.
| Root type | Heights | Plants per metre | When | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bare root | 20–80cm | 4–5 | November to April | Lowest cost on long hedges |
| Pot grown | 40–225cm | 2–4 | Most of the year | Planting outside the dormant season |
| Root balled | 80–350cm | 2–3 up to 225cm | October to April | Real height for less than instant |
| Instant hedging | 100–175cm | Sold per metre | Most of the year | A finished hedge on day one |
The exact plants-per-metre figure, price and availability are shown against each size above.
Which size and root type should I choose?
Smaller plants are an economical starting point when you have time for the hedge to fill out. For privacy sooner, compare larger plants and instant hedging. Look at bushiness as well as height when choosing your starting size.
- Pot grown: container-grown plants offering flexibility over your planting date.
- Bare root: a cost-effective choice for seasonal planting when you can allow young plants time to develop.
- Root balled: field-grown plants for seasonal planting, with larger sizes available for a taller screen from the start.
- Instant hedging: established hedge sections for more continuous coverage at planting. Check the length covered by each section.
Check the availability and any estimated dispatch date against your chosen option, especially when ordering seasonal or pre-order plants.
How many Cherry Laurel plants do I need?
Measure your hedge length in metres and use the plants-per-metre recommendation for your chosen size and root type. For example, if an option recommends 2 plants per metre, a 10-metre hedge needs 20 plants. This is an example, not a spacing recommendation for every size. For instant hedging, use the stated coverage of each section instead.
When comparing single plants and bulk packs, check the total number of plants you will receive and the cost for your whole hedge, including delivery. Compare the same height and root type rather than the pack price alone.
Do I need hedge plants or a clear-stem tree?
For a boundary that you want to fill out from low down, choose the hedging plants on this page. Our separate clear-stem Cherry Laurel trees have a raised leafy crown with a clear trunk beneath, so they serve a different purpose.
Cherry Laurel or Portuguese Laurel?
Cherry Laurel has larger, brighter green leaves and generally faster growth. Portuguese Laurel has smaller, darker leaves and reddish young stems. Read our Portuguese Laurel vs Cherry Laurel comparison if you are still deciding between them.
Why choose Cherry Laurel hedging?
Fast, dense evergreen screening
Cherry Laurel keeps its large, glossy leaves all year, so it screens just as well in winter as in summer. Once established it typically grows around 30–60cm a year, which makes it one of the quickest ways to turn a new boundary into a private garden. It is fully hardy in the UK and copes with wind and urban conditions well.
Easy to keep thick, and very forgiving
Cherry Laurel branches readily when it is trimmed, so regular cutting keeps the hedge dense from the ground up. Unlike Leylandii, it regrows from old wood, so an overgrown or leggy Laurel hedge can be cut back hard and renovated rather than replaced.
Value for wildlife
An untrimmed or lightly trimmed hedge produces spikes of white flowers in spring that are visited by bees, followed by berries that ripen from red to black and are eaten by birds. A dense evergreen hedge also gives nesting and roosting cover all year.
Cherry Laurel compared with other screening hedges
| Cherry Laurel | Portuguese Laurel | Leylandii | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growth | Fast | Moderate | Very fast |
| Foliage | Large, bright green | Smaller, dark green | Fine conifer foliage |
| Shade | Good | Good | Prefers sun |
| Regrows after hard pruning | Yes | Yes | No, not from bare brown wood |
| Width needed | Wide | Medium | Wide |
For a finer, more formal look or a slightly narrower hedge, compare Portuguese Laurel. For maximum speed in a sunny spot, see our Leylandii hedging.
What our grower says about Cherry Laurel
Cherry Laurel is one of the most dependable hedging plants we grow. It establishes well in a wide range of soils and, once settled in, produces strong, dense growth that makes it particularly useful for privacy screening.
My advice is not to be afraid of pruning Cherry Laurel regularly. Cutting it back encourages it to become thicker and bushier rather than simply taller. For the neatest finish, I prefer cutting individual shoots with secateurs rather than slicing through the larger leaves with hedge trimmers.
Good preparation and watering during the first growing season make a considerable difference to how quickly a new Cherry Laurel hedge establishes.
Choosing the right hedge
Is Cherry Laurel Right for You?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓Fast-growing evergreen screening
- ✓Dense year-round privacy
- ✓Large glossy green foliage
- ✓A hedge that responds well to trimming
- ✓A robust hedge for medium or tall boundaries
- ✓A versatile hedge for many UK gardens
Consider another hedge if:
- ×You have very restricted planting width
- ×You want a very slow-growing hedge
- ×You prefer small or fine-textured foliage
- ×You want a naturally formal-looking hedge
- ×You do not want to prune a vigorous hedge regularly
Where does Cherry Laurel grow best?
Soil and drainage
Cherry Laurel grows in most UK soils, including heavy clay, provided the ground does not stay waterlogged. It is less happy on very shallow chalk, where leaves can turn yellow. On heavy or compacted ground, prepare the whole planting strip rather than individual holes so water can drain away. If leaves do turn yellow, our answer to Why are my Laurel leaves turning yellow? explains the usual causes.
Sun and shade
It grows well in full sun and copes with a surprising amount of shade, which makes it useful under taller trees and beside buildings. Dry shade under established trees is still demanding, because the new hedge competes for water, so keep it well watered through its first summer.
Space and safety
Cherry Laurel has large leaves and makes a wide hedge, so allow room for it to be kept at least 60–90cm deep. The leaves and seeds are poisonous if eaten, so think carefully about planting it where livestock graze or dogs like to chew. Read Is Laurel poisonous to dogs? and Are Laurel berries poisonous? for the detail.
Cherry Laurel growth, spacing and pruning
How fast does Cherry Laurel grow?
Once established, Cherry Laurel typically grows 30–60cm a year, depending on soil, light and watering. Expect less top growth in the first season while the roots establish. If you need a screen quickly, larger root-balled plants or instant hedging give height from day one.
How far apart should Cherry Laurel be planted?
Plant in a single row. As a guide, plant 20–30cm bare-root plants at 5 per metre and 30–80cm plants at 4 per metre. Pot-grown plants from 60–120cm go in at 3 per metre, and root-balled plants from 125–225cm at 2 per metre. Instant hedging is sold by the metre, so you simply buy the length of your hedge. See our guide to planting a Laurel hedge for step-by-step planting.
When and how to prune
Trim an established hedge once or twice a year, typically after flowering in late spring and again in late summer, and always check for nesting birds first. Cutting individual shoots with secateurs avoids the browned, half-cut leaves that hedge trimmers leave behind. A hedge that has become too big can be cut back hard in late winter or early spring and will shoot again from the old wood. Our How to prune a Laurel hedge guide and When should I prune a Laurel hedge? answer cover timing in detail, and our Laurel hedge care guide covers watering and feeding.

Buying FAQs
How many Cherry Laurel plants do I need per metre?+
It depends on the size. As a guide, plant 20–30cm bare-root plants at 5 per metre, 30–80cm plants at 4 per metre, 60–120cm pot-grown plants at 3 per metre and 125–225cm root-balled plants at 2 per metre. Instant hedging is sold per metre. The exact figure is shown against each option above.
How fast does Cherry Laurel grow?+
Once established, Cherry Laurel typically grows around 30–60cm a year, depending on soil, light and watering. Growth is slower in the first season while the roots establish, then picks up from the second year.
When can I plant bare root Cherry Laurel?+
Bare-root Cherry Laurel is lifted while dormant and is normally available from November to April. You can pre-order now and your plants will be dispatched when the new season's stock is ready. Plant as soon as possible after delivery, when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Can I buy 6ft Cherry Laurel hedge plants?+
Yes. Our 175–200cm root-balled Cherry Laurel gives a hedge of around 6ft straight away, planted at 2 per metre, and we grow root-balled plants up to 300–350cm. Instant hedging up to 175cm is also available if you want a finished hedge on day one.
Will Cherry Laurel grow in shade or clay soil?+
Yes. Cherry Laurel grows well in sun or shade and copes with heavy clay, provided the soil does not stay waterlogged. It is less happy on very shallow chalk. In dry shade under trees, keep it well watered during its first year.
Is Cherry Laurel poisonous to dogs?+
Cherry Laurel leaves and seeds are poisonous if eaten, so it is not ideal where dogs like to chew plants or where livestock can reach it. Most dogs leave it alone, but if you are worried, read our full answer on whether Laurel is poisonous to dogs.
