Gwynne's Grower's Tip

Choose a conifer hedge for the space it will occupy once established, not simply for the height of the plants on delivery. Leave room to reach both sides for trimming, especially beside a fence or narrow path. If you want greater initial coverage, compare plant width and branching as well as height: a taller plant is not automatically a fuller one. For a long boundary, work out the quantity using the spacing recommended for the exact product and size. Buying extra plants to force a quicker result can leave the hedge unnecessarily crowded later.

Buying Conifer Hedging

01Which root types can I buy?
Root types vary by species, size and season. Check the options on your chosen product rather than assuming every conifer is available bare root, pot grown, root balled or as instant hedging. The product options show the formats and availability for that particular plant.
02Can I mix different conifers in one hedge?
You can, but differences in growth, colour and natural shape make a mixed conifer hedge less uniform. For an even, clipped boundary, choose one variety in a consistent size. If you want contrasting foliage, planting separate sections usually makes the overall design easier to manage.
03What is the fastest-growing conifer hedge?
Leylandii is the fastest-growing conifer hedge we sell, at 60cm or more a year for both Green and Golden Leylandii. Allow room to reach both sides, because it needs regular trimming.
04Which conifer hedge suits a small garden?
White Cedar ‘Smaragd’ suits tighter spaces. It grows slowly, about 10 to 20cm a year, with a naturally upright, conical shape.
05Is yew a conifer?
Yes. English Yew (Taxus baccata) is a conifer, with dense, dark green foliage that suits neatly clipped, formal hedges.
