Portuguese Laurel Hedging Plants
Prunus lusitanica
Portuguese Laurel hedge plants (Prunus lusitanica) create a dense evergreen boundary with dark green leaves and attractive red young stems. Choosing your Portuguese Laurel hedge
The right plants depend on your budget, planting date and how much privacy you need from the start. Compare the supplied height, root type and recommended coverage of each option to work out the cost of your whole hedge.
| Root type | Heights | Plants per metre | When | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bare root | 30–40cm | 5 | November to April | Lowest cost on long hedges |
| Pot grown | 40–200cm | 2–4 | Most of the year | Planting outside the dormant season |
| Root balled | 60–275cm | 2–3 up to 225cm | October to April | Real height for less than instant |
| Instant hedging | 60–180cm | Sold per metre | Most of the year | A finished hedge on day one |
The exact plants-per-metre figure, price and availability are shown against each size above.
Which root type should you choose?
- Pot grown: a flexible option when you want to plant outside the dormant season. Plants are supplied in containers and can be planted throughout the year when the ground is workable, with careful watering during dry weather.
- Bare root: an economical starting point for a new hedge if you can plant during the dormant season and allow young plants time to fill out. Supplied without pots or soil around the roots.
- Root balled: field-grown plants lifted with soil around their roots. A useful option when you want larger plants for seasonal planting. Check the size and estimated delivery shown for your chosen option.
- Instant hedging: plants grown together to form an established hedge section, giving more continuous coverage from planting. Check the supplied height and the length covered by each unit.
Choosing a size for privacy
Smaller plants cost less initially and suit projects where you have time for the hedge to develop. For privacy sooner, compare taller plants and instant hedging, paying attention to bushiness as well as height.
Portuguese Laurel typically makes around 20-40cm of growth a year once established, depending on soil, water, weather and pruning. Newly planted hedges may grow more slowly while their roots establish, so choose a starting size that suits your screening needs.
Portuguese Laurel or Cherry Laurel?
Choose Portuguese Laurel if you prefer smaller leaves, reddish young stems and a fine, formal finish. Cherry Laurel has larger leaves and generally faster growth, making it worth considering when rapid coverage is your main priority.
See our Portuguese Laurel vs Cherry Laurel comparison for help choosing between them.

Why choose Portuguese Laurel hedging?
A refined, formal evergreen
Portuguese Laurel has smaller, darker leaves than Cherry Laurel and attractive red young stems, so a clipped hedge looks finer and more formal. It keeps its foliage all year and can be kept as a neat boundary of around 1.2–2m or grown taller for a substantial privacy screen.
Tough and adaptable
It is very hardy, copes well with cold winters and exposed inland sites, and is one of the best evergreen hedges for chalky or alkaline soils, where Cherry Laurel can struggle. Like Cherry Laurel, it regrows well from older wood, so an overgrown hedge can be cut back and renovated.
Flowers and berries for wildlife
A lightly trimmed hedge produces sprays of small, scented white flowers in early summer that are visited by bees, followed by berries that ripen to dark purple and are eaten by birds.
Portuguese Laurel compared with Cherry Laurel and Yew
| Portuguese Laurel | Cherry Laurel | English Yew | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growth once established | About 20–40cm a year | About 30–60cm a year | About 20–40cm a year |
| Leaves | Smaller, dark green, red stems | Large, bright green | Fine, dark green needles |
| Chalky soil | Very good | Less happy on shallow chalk | Very good |
| Shade | Good | Good | Excellent |
| Look when clipped | Neat and formal | Bold and leafy | The most formal |
For faster screening with bigger leaves, compare Cherry Laurel hedge plants. For the crispest formal finish, see English Yew. For a clear-stem specimen, see our Portuguese Laurel tree.
What our grower says about Portuguese Laurel
When choosing Portuguese Laurel for privacy, I would look at the bushiness of the plants as well as their height. Good branching lower down helps you build a leafy screen from the base. Work out the quantity using the recommendation for your chosen size, and leave enough space to trim both sides of the finished hedge. If your budget means starting with smaller plants, give them time to fill out. Preparing the ground well and keeping the roots watered while they establish will help you get the best from them.
Choosing the right hedge
Is Portuguese Laurel right for you?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓Evergreen privacy throughout the year
- ✓A formal garden boundary that responds well to clipping
- ✓Smaller leaves and attractive red young stems
- ✓A hedge for sun or partial shade in well-drained soil
Consider another hedge if:
- ×Your soil stays waterlogged for long periods
- ×You prefer the faster growth and larger leaves of Cherry Laurel
- ×You need a hedge that stays compact without regular trimming
- ×You need foliage that is safe for pets or livestock to eat
Where does Portuguese Laurel grow best?
Soil and drainage
Portuguese Laurel grows in most well-drained soils, including chalk, loam and clay that does not stay waterlogged. Avoid ground where water sits for long periods after rain. On heavy or compacted ground, prepare the whole planting strip so water can drain away, rather than filling individual holes with compost.
Sun and shade
It grows in full sun, partial shade and considerable shade, which makes it useful beside buildings and under taller trees. In deep shade it grows more slowly and less densely, and dry shade beneath established trees means the new hedge competes for water, so keep it well watered while it establishes.
Exposure and safety
It copes well with wind on inland sites. On the coast, salt-laden wind can scorch the foliage, so our coastal hedging is a better choice for front-line sites. The leaves and seeds are poisonous if eaten, so avoid planting where livestock graze. Read Is Laurel hedging poisonous? for the detail.
Portuguese Laurel growth, spacing and pruning
How fast does Portuguese Laurel grow?
Once established, Portuguese Laurel typically grows around 20–40cm a year in suitable conditions. Growth is often slower in the first season while the roots establish, so allow three to five years for small plants to form a tall screen. Our answer to How fast does Portuguese Laurel grow as a hedge? explains what affects growth.
How far apart should Portuguese Laurel be planted?
Plant in a single row. As a guide, plant 30–40cm bare-root plants at 5 per metre and 40–60cm pot-grown plants at 4 per metre. Plants from 60–150cm go in at 3 per metre, and larger plants from 150–225cm at 2 per metre. Instant hedging is sold by the metre. See our guide to planting a Laurel hedge for step-by-step planting.
When and how to prune
An established Portuguese Laurel hedge usually needs one main trim a year, in summer once any nesting birds have finished, with a light tidy later if needed. Use secateurs or sharp hedge trimmers and keep the base slightly wider than the top so light reaches the lower branches. Read our How to prune a Laurel hedge guide and When should I prune a Laurel hedge?, and our Laurel hedge care guide for watering and feeding.

Buying FAQs
How many Portuguese Laurel plants do I need?+
Measure your hedge length in metres and use the plants-per-metre recommendation for your chosen size and root type. For example, a 10-metre hedge at 2 plants per metre needs 20 plants. Recommendations vary between options. For instant hedging, use the stated coverage of each unit instead of a single-plant spacing calculation.
How fast does Portuguese Laurel grow?+
Once established, Portuguese Laurel typically grows around 20–40cm a year, depending on soil, light and watering. Growth is often slower in the first season while the roots establish.
Can I pre-order Portuguese Laurel for the planting season?+
Yes, where an option is marked for pre-order. Bare-root and rootballed plants are seasonal, so check the estimated delivery shown for the option you select. Lifting and dispatch depend on suitable conditions. If you need plants for a particular project date, contact us before ordering to discuss the timing.
Can I buy bare root Portuguese Laurel?+
Yes. Bare-root Portuguese Laurel is lifted while dormant and is normally supplied between November and April. You can pre-order now, and it is the most economical way to plant a long hedge. Plant as soon as possible after delivery, when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Can you help with a large Portuguese Laurel order?+
Yes. We supply Portuguese Laurel for private gardens, landscaping and commercial projects. Contact our nursery team with your hedge length, preferred starting height, site conditions and planting date so we can help you compare the available sizes, root types and quantities.
Will Portuguese Laurel grow on chalk or in shade?+
Yes. Portuguese Laurel is one of the best evergreen hedges for chalky soil, and it grows in sun, partial shade or considerable shade. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, and keep it well watered in dry shade while it establishes.
