Green Leylandii hedge plants for fast evergreen screening
Green Leylandii, commonly known as Leyland cypress, is a vigorous evergreen conifer used where a substantial hedge or screen is needed quickly. Its dense deep-green foliage makes it particularly useful for privacy, boundary screening, wind protection and reducing the visual impact of roads, buildings and neighbouring properties.
The accepted botanical name is now generally written × Cuprocyparis leylandii, although the older name × Cupressocyparis leylandii is still widely used in horticulture. Our Green Leylandii is supplied pot grown in a range of starting heights, allowing you to choose between economical younger plants and larger plants where more immediate height is important.
Gwynne's Grower's Tip
Leylandii's speed is its biggest advantage, but only if you manage it from the beginning. Plant at the recommended density for the size you buy, keep new plants properly watered and start trimming while the hedge is still young. I would always rather take a little growth off regularly than leave it for several years and then have to cut back into old brown wood.
Choosing the right hedge
Is Green Leylandii right for your hedge?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓Fast evergreen privacy and screening
- ✓Longer boundaries where rapid establishment matters
- ✓Exposed or coastal sites with suitable well-drained soil
- ✓Hedges you are happy to trim regularly
- ✓Pot-grown planting where a flexible planting season is useful
Consider another hedge if:
- ×Very narrow borders with little room for future trimming
- ×Persistently waterlogged ground
- ×Positions where future access for maintenance will be difficult
- ×A hedge you want to leave completely unmanaged
- ×Deep shade with heavy competition from established trees
Why choose Green Leylandii for a hedge?
Green Leylandii is the classic choice when the main priority is fast evergreen privacy. Once established and growing well, it can commonly make around 60cm or more of annual growth, allowing a young hedge to develop into a substantial screen much faster than many slower-growing evergreen species.
Its dense foliage also makes Green Leylandii useful for wind protection, larger boundaries and screening unwanted views. The important part is management: start trimming while the hedge is young and keep both its height and width under control. Regular light trimming within healthy green foliage gives a far better long-term result than allowing the hedge to become oversized and then trying to cut it hard back.
Choosing the right Green Leylandii size
The best starting size depends on how quickly you want the hedge to provide visible screening, how long the hedge is and the budget available. Smaller Leylandii plants are easier to handle and are usually the most economical option for long hedge runs. Larger plants give more height and presence from the day they are planted.
Planting density changes as the starting size increases. Use the live plants-per-metre recommendation shown against the exact size you choose rather than applying one spacing rule to every Leylandii plant. The selector above also shows current stock, individual prices and any available bulk-buy options.
Planting and maintaining Green Leylandii
Pot-grown Green Leylandii can be planted throughout the year when ground conditions are suitable. Prepare the planting line well, avoid persistently waterlogged soil and make sure newly planted Leylandii receives regular deep watering while the root system establishes. Keeping grass and weeds away from the immediate root area will also reduce competition for moisture.
Begin trimming from an early stage rather than waiting until the hedge reaches its final size. Leylandii responds well to regular clipping while healthy green foliage remains on the branches, but it does not reliably regenerate from old bare brown wood. Establishing the width and height you want from the beginning is therefore much easier than trying to reduce an overgrown hedge later.

Green Leylandii Buying FAQs
How fast does Green Leylandii grow?+
Green Leylandii is a very fast-growing evergreen hedge. Once established and growing well it can commonly make around 60cm or more of growth in a year. Actual growth varies with soil, moisture, exposure, plant age and pruning, so the figure should be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee.
How far apart should Green Leylandii hedge plants be planted?+
Spacing depends on the starting size you choose. Smaller Green Leylandii plants are planted more closely together, while larger plants already have a broader framework and need more space. Use the plants-per-metre recommendation shown against the exact live product size above.
Can Green Leylandii be kept at around 2 metres high?+
Yes. Green Leylandii can be maintained as a hedge at around 2 metres or another manageable chosen height, provided trimming begins early and is carried out regularly. Keep cuts within healthy green foliage rather than allowing the hedge to become oversized and then cutting deeply into old brown wood.
When can pot-grown Green Leylandii be planted?+
Pot-grown Green Leylandii can be planted throughout the year when ground and weather conditions are suitable. Avoid planting into frozen or persistently waterlogged soil and make sure plants receive regular watering while they establish, particularly during dry weather.
Is Green Leylandii suitable for exposed and coastal sites?+
Yes. Green Leylandii is suitable for exposed positions and can also be used in coastal gardens. Good soil preparation and careful watering during establishment are particularly important on windy sites because evergreen foliage continues to lose moisture even when conditions are cool.
What is the difference between Green Leylandii and Golden Leylandii?+
The main difference is foliage colour. Green Leylandii produces the classic deep-green evergreen screen, while Golden Leylandii has brighter yellow-gold foliage. Both can form dense fast-growing evergreen hedges. You can compare both varieties on our Leylandii hedging range.
