How Do I Identify and Deal With Euonymus Scale on Green Spire?
Euonymus scale is one of the more important pests to check for on Green Spire. Early infestations can be easy to miss because the insects sit tightly against leaves and stems.
Quick Answer
Euonymus scale is a sap-feeding insect, Unaspis euonymi, and Euonymus japonicus is particularly susceptible. Look for narrow white scales, mainly on leaves, and darker brown, broader scales on stems. Heavy infestations can cause yellow mottling, leaf drop and dieback. Light populations may be tolerated, but heavily infested shoots can be pruned out. Encourage natural predators, keep the plant growing well without overfeeding, and only use a plant-protection product if the pest is correctly identified and the product is currently approved for that use.

Quick Facts
| Pest | Euonymus scale (Unaspis euonymi) |
|---|---|
| Most susceptible group | Euonymus japonicus |
| Male scale | Narrow, white and usually found on foliage |
| Female scale | Broader, brownish and commonly found on stems |
| Severe symptoms | Yellow mottling, leaf fall and dieback |
What does Euonymus scale look like on Green Spire?
Euonymus scale can be difficult to spot until numbers build up. Male scales are usually narrow, white coverings on the foliage, while females are broader and brownish and are more often found on stems. Check the undersides of leaves, inner stems and sheltered growth, not just the outside surface of the hedge.
Green Spire is an Euonymus japonicus cultivar, and this group is particularly susceptible to Euonymus scale. Our Euonymus hedge care guide includes scale among the main problems to monitor.
What damage does Euonymus scale cause?
A light population may cause little obvious harm. As numbers increase, the leaves can develop yellow mottling and lose their normal dark glossy appearance. Severe infestations can lead to leaf fall, weak growth and dieback.
Before assuming that every yellow Green Spire leaf is scale damage, also check soil moisture and root conditions. Drought, waterlogging and establishment stress can produce similar general yellowing.
How should you deal with a light infestation?
Small populations can sometimes be tolerated while natural predators build up. Adult scales that are easy to reach can be removed manually, although this is unlikely to control a heavy infestation on its own.
Keep the plant healthy with correct watering and drainage, but do not respond by applying large amounts of fertiliser. Soft, stressed or overfed growth is not a substitute for dealing with the pest itself.
What should you do if the infestation is severe?
Prune out heavily infested shoots where this can be done without ruining the hedge shape, then dispose of the affected material away from the plants. Clean pruning tools before moving from badly affected sections to healthy growth.
If you are considering a pesticide or other plant-protection product, first confirm that the pest really is Euonymus scale. Product approvals and label directions can change, so use only a current UK-approved product for the stated use and follow its label exactly.
When should you inspect Green Spire for scale?
The scale coverings can be present throughout the year, but young mobile nymphs are produced during the growing season. Regular inspection in spring, summer and early autumn makes it easier to notice a developing problem before the hedge loses significant foliage.
Gwynne's Grower's Tip
With Green Spire, I would inspect inside the hedge rather than judging it from the front. Scale can build up on sheltered stems and the undersides of leaves before the outer surface looks badly affected. If only one section is heavily infested, deal with that area early and clean your tools before moving along the hedge. Also check the roots and moisture before feeding a yellow plant, because scale and root stress can occur at the same time.
