Box Hedge
(Buxus Sempervirens)
Box Hedge, Buxus sempervirens, is a slow-growing evergreen hedging plant with small, glossy dark-green leaves and a naturally dense, compact habit. It is particularly well suited to low formal hedges, garden edging, parterres and topiary because it responds well to regular clipping and can be maintained at a precise shape.

What our grower says about Box Hedge
Box is one of the best hedging plants for creating a neat, low formal hedge. It naturally has a dense, compact habit and responds extremely well to regular trimming, which is why it has been used for edging, parterres and formal gardens for generations.
For the best results, plant Box into well-prepared, free-draining soil and avoid sites that remain waterlogged for long periods. Once established, light regular trimming will encourage a thicker, more even hedge rather than allowing individual shoots to become too long.
I would also keep the plants well watered during their first growing season, particularly during dry weather. Good establishment and steady growth will give you a much stronger, denser Box hedge in the long term.
Choosing the right hedge
Is Box Hedge Right for You?
A great choice if you want:
- A neat low formal hedge
- Small glossy evergreen leaves
- A hedge for edging or parterres
- A slow-growing hedge that is easy to shape
- Traditional formal garden planting
- A hedge that responds well to regular clipping
Consider another hedge if:
- You want fast screening or quick height
- Your soil stays wet or poorly drained
- You want a tall privacy hedge
- You want to minimise the risk of Box-specific pests and diseases
- You prefer a more informal or natural-looking hedge
