Tripod or trellis: which Star Jasmine should I buy?
| 160–180cm tripod | 125 x 80cm trellis panel | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Tall, narrow column on a tripod | Flat panel, trained across a trellis |
| Best for | Large pots, obelisks, doorways and single feature plants | Covering a fence or wall straight away |
| Coverage | Grows on to cover a fence or trellis over time | About 80cm of fence covered from day one |
| Delivery | Large box | Pallet |
How many trellis panels do I need?
Each trellis plant is about 80cm wide, so for continuous cover set them roughly 80cm apart along the fence. That is about 5 panels for 4m of fence or 8 panels for 6.4m. For a more open, budget-friendly screen, space them further apart and let them grow together, or plant tripod plants against a trellis or wires fixed to the fence.
Using Star Jasmine in your garden
A screen without the width of a hedge
Trained flat against a fence or wall, Star Jasmine takes up only a few centimetres of border but still gives a leafy, flowering screen. That makes it ideal for small gardens, side passages and patios where a hedge would be too wide. For other ways to screen a boundary, see our hedging for fences and walls or pleached trees for screening above fence height.
In pots and on patios
A tripod plant grows well in a large container, at least 50–60cm across, filled with good-quality compost. Container plants need regular watering in summer and an annual top-dressing or feed, because they cannot reach moisture and nutrients in the ground.
Is Star Jasmine a true jasmine?
No. Its botanical name is Trachelospermum jasminoides, and it belongs to a different genus from true jasmines (Jasminum). It earns the name from its jasmine-like scent and white, star-shaped flowers.
Choosing the right hedge
Is Star Jasmine right for you?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓Scent near a patio, door or seating area
- ✓Covering a fence or wall without losing border space
- ✓Large pots and obelisks
- ✓A sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered spot
Consider another hedge if:
- ×Your garden is cold, exposed or a frost pocket
- ×You need a freestanding hedge
- ×The soil stays wet in winter
- ×You cannot water in the first summer
Planting and caring for Star Jasmine
When to plant
Our Star Jasmine is pot grown, so it can be planted for most of the year. Spring and early autumn are ideal in the UK, when the soil is warm and moist. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground or during a heatwave.
How to plant
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole wider than the pot, mix in hedge planting compost, and plant at the same depth as in the pot. Fix trellis panels securely to the fence or wall, and leave a small gap behind for air. Water thoroughly and keep watering through the first summer.
In colder gardens
Star Jasmine is evergreen in a warm, sheltered UK garden, and the leaves often take on bronze or red tones in cold weather. In colder or exposed areas, plant it against a south or west-facing wall or fence, out of cold winds, because hard frost can damage the leaves. Avoid frost pockets and dry ground under roof overhangs.
Pruning
Trim lightly after flowering in late summer to keep it neat and tie new shoots into the support. The stems bleed a milky sap when cut, so wear gloves.

Buying FAQs
Should I buy the tripod or the trellis Star Jasmine?+
Choose the 160–180cm tripod for a large pot, an obelisk or a single feature plant. Choose the 125cm high, 80cm wide trellis panel if you want to cover a fence or wall straight away, because it arrives already trained flat.
How many Star Jasmine trellis panels do I need for my fence?+
Each trellis plant is about 80cm wide, so set them roughly 80cm apart for continuous cover: about 5 panels for 4m of fence or 8 for 6.4m. Space them further apart for a more open screen that fills in over time.
When should I plant Star Jasmine in the UK?+
Pot-grown Star Jasmine can be planted for most of the year, but spring and early autumn are best in the UK. Avoid frozen or waterlogged ground and very hot, dry spells, and water well through the first summer.
Can Star Jasmine grow in a pot?+
Yes. A tripod plant does well in a large container, at least 50–60cm across, in good compost. Water regularly in summer and feed or top-dress each spring.
What is the botanical name of Star Jasmine?+
Star Jasmine is Trachelospermum jasminoides. Despite the name, it is not a true jasmine (Jasminum), but it has a similar scent and white, star-shaped flowers.
When does Star Jasmine flower?+
Star Jasmine flowers in summer once established, with clusters of strongly scented white, star-shaped flowers. Established plants usually flower more freely each year.
