This is a colour mix of Beech rather than a multi-species mixed native hedge. Both the Green and Purple plants are forms of Fagus sylvatica, so they grow at a similar rate, respond to the same pruning and knit together naturally as one hedge.
The 75% Green and 25% Purple balance keeps the hedge predominantly green while adding regular darker foliage through the planting line. For the standard five-plants-per-metre layout, plant in two staggered rows approximately 30cm apart, with around 40cm between plants within each row. Spread the Purple Beech through the hedge rather than grouping it all at one end unless you deliberately want blocks of colour.
Nursery Advice for a Mixed Beech Hedge
I like this mix where somebody wants more colour than a plain Green Beech hedge without making the whole boundary dark Purple Beech. The 75% green and 25% purple balance gives a natural contrast while keeping the hedge visually unified. I would spread the Purple Beech evenly along the planting line rather than grouping it all at one end. Both types can then be planted, watered and trimmed together in exactly the same way.
Choosing the right hedge
Is the Green and Purple Beech Mix Right for Your Site?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓Formal hedges where you want more foliage colour than Green Beech alone
- ✓Predominantly green boundaries with regular purple and burgundy contrast
- ✓Full sun or partial shade
- ✓Moist but well-drained soil
- ✓Longer hedge runs where bare-root planting offers good value
- ✓Boundaries where seasonal colour and winter leaf retention are valued
Consider another hedge if:
- ×Persistently waterlogged ground
- ×Very heavy wet clay with poor drainage
- ×Deep shade where the Purple Beech colour may be reduced
- ×Sites requiring guaranteed evergreen foliage throughout winter
- ×Projects that specifically require a multi-species native wildlife hedge
- ×Planting outside the bare-root season where immediate planting is essential

Green & Purple Beech Mix Buying FAQs
What is included in the Green and Purple Beech Hedging Mix?+
The mix is approximately 75% Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and 25% Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'). This gives a predominantly green hedge with regular darker purple and burgundy foliage for contrast.
Is this the same as a mixed native hedge?+
No. This is a same-species Beech colour mix rather than a multi-species native hedging mixture. Green Beech and Purple Beech are closely matched forms of Fagus sylvatica and are planted together to create foliage contrast within one Beech hedge.
How many mixed Beech plants do I need per metre?+
Our standard mixed Beech planting layout uses five plants per metre in two staggered rows. The rows are positioned approximately 30cm apart with plants around 40cm apart within each row.
How should I arrange the Green and Purple Beech plants?+
Spread the Purple Beech plants evenly through the hedge so the darker foliage appears as regular highlights among the Green Beech. Both types grow at a similar rate and can be clipped together, so there is no need to manage them as separate sections.
Does a Green and Purple Beech hedge keep its leaves in winter?+
Green and Purple Beech are deciduous rather than evergreen. A regularly clipped hedge commonly retains much of its dry copper-brown foliage through winter until new spring growth appears, but the amount retained varies with exposure, pruning, hedge age and weather.
When can I plant the Green and Purple Beech Hedging Mix?+
This mix is currently supplied as bare-root hedging and is planted during the dormant season, normally from November to March. Pre-ordering before the season is useful for larger hedge runs and helps secure the quantity required.

What Is a Green and Purple Beech Hedging Mix?
Green and Purple Beech Hedging Mix combines the traditional fresh green foliage of Fagus sylvatica with the burgundy-purple foliage of Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'. Because both are Beech, the finished hedge has a consistent growth habit and can be clipped as one continuous boundary.
Our mix is approximately 75% Green Beech and 25% Purple Beech. This creates a softer patterned effect than planting an entire hedge in Purple Beech, while giving noticeably more foliage contrast than a standard Green Beech hedge.
Planting a Mixed Green and Purple Beech Hedge
For an even result, distribute the Purple Beech plants along the full length of the hedge rather than planting them together in one group. The darker foliage will then appear as regular highlights through the predominantly green planting.
Our standard layout uses five plants per metre in two staggered rows. Position the rows approximately 30cm apart and space plants at around 40cm within each row. Bare-root plants should be kept moist before planting, planted at their previous soil level and watered thoroughly after planting.
Seasonal Colour and Winter Screening
During spring and summer, the Green Beech provides fresh green foliage while the Purple Beech develops darker purple, burgundy and bronze tones. Good light helps the Purple Beech develop its strongest colour, although the hedge can also grow in partial shade.
Both forms are deciduous. Their foliage turns copper-brown in autumn and a regularly clipped Beech hedge often retains much of this dry foliage through winter until new spring growth develops. This provides useful seasonal screening, but the hedge should not be described as evergreen and winter leaf retention will vary with exposure, pruning and weather.
