Cotoneaster lacteus Hedge
Late Cotoneaster
Cotoneaster lacteus, the late Cotoneaster, is a dense evergreen hedge with leathery dark-green leaves, creamy white flowers in summer and clusters of red berries that last well into winter.
It makes a neat, year-round screen of 1.5–3m that copes with wind, dry soil and coastal air, and feeds birds when food is scarce. Supplied pot grown at 30–70cm, ready to plant at almost any time of year.

Why plant Cotoneaster lacteus as a hedge?
Evergreen screening with berries
Lacteus keeps its large, leathery leaves through winter, so it makes a proper evergreen screen. The leaves have soft, pale undersides that catch the light when the wind blows.
Berries when birds need them
It flowers later than most Cotoneasters, in June and July, so its red berries ripen late and often hang on the hedge into the new year, giving birds food through the coldest months.
Tough and easy
It copes with wind, dry soil and coastal air, and needs only a light trim once a year.

- ×The ground stays waterlogged
Where does it grow best?
Sun, wind and coast
It grows in full sun or part shade, flowering and fruiting best in sun, and copes with wind and coastal air. See our coastal hedging for more seaside options.
Soil
Any well-drained soil, including dry, poor ground, chalk and clay that does not stay waterlogged.
Planting and trimming
Planting
Plant pot-grown plants at almost any time of year when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Firm in well and water through the first spring and summer.
Trimming
Trim lightly once a year after flowering, taking care to leave the young berries. Avoid hard cutting, which removes next year's flowers and fruit. Our Cotoneaster care guide has more detail.

Buying FAQs
What size Cotoneaster lacteus should I buy?+
For most hedges, 30–50cm plants at 4 per metre are the best value and soon fill out. Choose 50–70cm plants at 3 per metre for a little more height straight away.
How many Cotoneaster lacteus do I need per metre?+
Plant 30–50cm plants at 4 per metre and 50–70cm plants at 3 per metre in a single row. The calculator on this page works out the total from your hedge length.
Can I plant Cotoneaster lacteus now?+
Yes. It is pot grown, so it can be planted at almost any time of year when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Water it well through its first spring and summer.
Is Cotoneaster lacteus evergreen?+
Yes. It keeps its dark green leaves all year, which makes it the better choice of our Cotoneasters for year-round screening.
How tall does a lacteus hedge grow?+
As a hedge it is usually kept at 1.5–3m. Left untrimmed it can reach about 4m, but a light trim once a year keeps it at the height you want.
Is Cotoneaster lacteus invasive?+
It is not on the list of Cotoneaster species banned from planting in the wild in England and Wales, but birds spread the seeds, so keep it to gardens and hedges rather than next to wild or protected areas.
