Why plant a Common Dogwood hedge?
A true native
Common Dogwood is a natural part of British hedgerows, so it blends into the countryside and suits native and mixed wildlife hedges.
Food for wildlife
Clusters of white flowers in early summer feed bees and other insects, and the black berries that follow feed birds in autumn.
Colour through the seasons
The leaves turn deep red in autumn, and the bare stems glow dark red, especially on the sunny side, through winter.

Choosing the right hedge
Is Common Dogwood right for you?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓A native or wildlife hedge
- ✓Damp, heavy, clay or chalky soil
- ✓Mixing with other native hedging
- ✓A long hedge at low cost, bare root
Consider another hedge if:
- ×Year-round privacy (it is deciduous)
- ×The brightest winter stem colour (choose Red Stemmed Dogwood)
- ×A crisp, formal clipped hedge
Where does it grow best?
Sun or part shade
It grows in full sun or part shade; stems colour most strongly in sun.
Damp and heavy soil
Dogwood is one of the best hedges for damp, heavy and clay soils, as long as the ground is not permanently waterlogged. See our hedges for wet soil for more options.
Planting and pruning
Planting
Plant bare-root plants from November to March and pot-grown plants at any time of year when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Water through the first spring and summer.
Pruning for colour
The best colour is on young stems. Once established, cut a third of the oldest stems to the base each spring to keep new coloured growth coming, or trim more lightly for a fuller hedge with more flowers and berries. Our Dogwood care guide explains both methods.
