Rosa rugosa, commonly known as Rugosa Rose or Ramanas Rose, makes a strong informal flowering hedge with interest through much of the year. Its fresh green foliage provides a dense backdrop for fragrant pink flowers, which are followed by prominent orange-red hips later in the season. It is particularly useful where a robust hedge is needed, coping well with exposed locations, coastal conditions and a wide range of soils once established.
Rosa Rugosa Hedging
Rosa rugosa is well suited to informal hedging where flowers, wildlife value and resilience are more important than a tightly clipped formal appearance. The naturally bushy growth creates useful screening, while the thorny stems can also help form a secure boundary. Regular pruning can be used to control the height and encourage dense new growth.
A Tough Hedge for Coastal and Exposed Gardens
One of the main advantages of a Rosa rugosa hedge is its ability to cope with challenging positions. It has good tolerance of wind and salt-laden air, making it particularly useful for coastal gardens and exposed sites. Once established it is also relatively tolerant of poorer soils and dry periods, although good preparation and watering during establishment will always give the best results.
Flowers, Rose Hips and Wildlife
The fragrant pink flowers of Rosa rugosa appear through summer and are attractive to pollinating insects. Later, the flowers develop into large orange-red hips that provide strong autumn interest and a useful food source for wildlife. Its dense, thorny structure also provides valuable cover for birds and other garden wildlife.
Our Nursery Advice
Rosa rugosa is one of the more useful choices when a customer needs a flowering hedge for a difficult or exposed position. It is naturally tough, responds well to pruning and gives you flowers, hips and a dense thorny structure rather than just a plain green screen.
Choosing the right hedge
Is Rosa Rugosa Right for Your Hedge?
A great choice if you want:
- ✓Rosa rugosa is a good choice for informal flowering hedges, coastal gardens, exposed positions, wildlife-friendly planting and boundaries where a dense thorny hedge is useful.
Consider another hedge if:
- ×Choose another species if you want a very formal, tightly clipped hedge, an evergreen screen or a hedge immediately beside a narrow path where the thorny stems and naturally spreading growth could become inconvenient.

What is the difference between Rosa rugosa and Rosa rugosa Alba?+
