Green Beech Hedge
Fagus sylvatica
Green Beech hedge plants (Fagus sylvatica) are the classic green form of Beech, with fresh spring and summer foliage that turns warm copper-brown in autumn. On a regularly clipped hedge, many of the dry leaves are retained through winter, giving useful seasonal screening from a deciduous native species.

Green Beech is a strong choice for formal garden boundaries, longer landscape hedges and seasonal screening where a dense deciduous hedge is preferred. Fagus sylvatica responds well to regular clipping and can be maintained at a practical hedge height rather than allowed to develop into a tree.
Choose the root type and starting height that best suits your project. Bare-root Green Beech is the economical seasonal option for larger planting runs, pot-grown plants give more flexibility through the year, and instant hedging provides established height and structure from planting. The recommended plants per metre varies with the size and format selected, so use the spacing shown beside the exact product option.
Nursery Advice for Green Beech
Green Beech is the traditional choice when you want a neat, long-lived deciduous hedge with bright green summer foliage and copper colour through autumn and winter. The most important site factor is drainage. It establishes well on a wide range of soils where excess water can move away, but I would choose Hornbeam instead on persistently wet ground or a difficult frost-prone site. For a dense hedge, plant at the spacing shown for the size you buy, keep the root zone watered while it establishes and trim established growth in August.
Choosing the right hedge

- ✓Formal and traditional garden hedges

- ×Very dry sites without reliable establishment watering
- ×Deep shade beneath dense mature trees
- ×Sites requiring guaranteed green evergreen foliage through winter

Green Beech Buying FAQs
Is Green Beech evergreen?+
No. Green Beech is deciduous. Its foliage turns copper-brown in autumn and a regularly clipped hedge often retains many of those dry leaves through winter, but it should not be described as a true evergreen hedge.
Does Green Beech keep its leaves in winter?+
A clipped Green Beech hedge commonly holds a useful amount of dry copper-brown foliage through winter until new growth appears in spring. Retention varies with hedge age, pruning, exposure, weather and plant health, so it is not guaranteed.
How fast does Green Beech hedging grow?+
At Hedging Plants Direct we use approximately 20–40cm of annual growth once established as a practical guide. The first year can be slower while the roots establish, and actual growth depends on soil moisture, light, competition, exposure and pruning.
How many Green Beech plants do I need per metre?+
The correct number depends on the height and root type selected. Small bare-root whips are planted more closely than larger plants, while instant hedging is supplied as established units covering about one metre. Use the plants-per-metre figure shown beside the exact product variation you are ordering.
When can I plant Green Beech hedging?+
Bare-root Green Beech is planted during the dormant season, normally from November to March. Pot-grown plants can be planted throughout the year when the ground is workable and watering can be maintained. Instant hedging can also be planted when conditions are suitable, subject to current stock and size availability.
Should I choose Green Beech or Purple Beech?+
Choose Green Beech for the classic fresh green summer look and warm copper-brown autumn and winter colour. Purple or Copper Beech has darker red-purple summer foliage but very similar growing and pruning needs. If you are deciding between them, use our Beech hedging category to compare the range.

Green Beech Hedging for Seasonal Screening
Green Beech is deciduous, not evergreen. Its fresh green leaves deepen through summer before turning yellow, orange and copper-brown in autumn. A regularly clipped hedge commonly keeps much of this dry foliage through winter until new spring growth pushes it away, giving more winter cover than many other deciduous hedges.
For the best winter leaf retention, keep the hedge dense with regular pruning and give an established hedge its main trim in August. Exposure, hedge age, weather and pruning history all affect how many leaves remain through winter, so leaf retention should not be treated as guaranteed evergreen cover.
Where to Plant Green Beech
Green Beech grows best in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and performs well in full sun or partial shade. It can grow on clay, loam, sand and chalk where drainage is suitable, but it dislikes persistently waterlogged ground and severe drought.
On heavy, wet clay, in a frost pocket or where water regularly sits around the roots, Hornbeam is usually the safer alternative. Deep shade and strong root competition from mature trees can also lead to thinner growth.
Choosing Green Beech Size and Root Type
For long hedge runs and value planting, bare-root Green Beech is normally the most economical choice during the dormant season. Pot-grown Green Beech can be planted whenever conditions are suitable and is useful when planting outside the bare-root season. Instant Green Beech is the option for projects where immediate height and structure are more important than lowest initial cost.
Planting density is size-specific. Smaller bare-root plants need more plants per metre than larger pot-grown plants, while instant units cover approximately one metre each. Always follow the density shown for the selected variation rather than applying one universal spacing to every Green Beech size.
