Espalier refers to form of pleaching which has more of an open habit, unlike conventional pleaching where the idea is to form a suspended screen. Espalier trees have had their branches fanned out horizontally, and this style is most common with Lime and fruit trees.
Espalier Lime Trees are the quintessential victorian style avenue tree. This form of pleaching is quite open, unlike Pleached Hornbeam, and is more of a decorative form.
