Red Stemmed Dogwood (Cornus alba 'Sibirica') is grown for its brilliant crimson winter stems, which glow from leaf fall until spring.

In summer it has fresh green leaves and creamy-white flowers, followed by white berries and red-purple autumn colour. It copes with damp and heavy soil and makes a colourful, informal hedge of 1.5–2.5m. Bare root from £1.95, or pot grown.

Why plant a Red Stemmed Dogwood hedge?

Winter colour

When the leaves drop, the bare crimson stems become the star of the garden, especially in low winter sun or against a dark background.

Seasonal interest

Creamy-white flowers in late spring are followed by white berries for birds, and the leaves turn red and purple before they fall.

Tough and adaptable

It grows in most soils, including heavy clay and damp ground where many hedges struggle, in sun or part shade.

What size Red Stemmed Dogwood should I buy?

40–60cm or 60–90cm bare-root plants are the best value and establish quickly. Choose 90–120cm for more height straight away, or 80–100cm pot-grown plants to plant outside the bare-root season.

How many Red Stemmed Dogwood do I need per metre?

Plant 40–90cm bare-root plants at 7 per metre and 90–120cm at 5 per metre. Pot-grown 80–100cm plants go in at 4 per metre. The calculator on this page works out the total.

When is bare-root Dogwood delivered?

Is Red Stemmed Dogwood evergreen?

No. It is deciduous: the leaves fall in autumn, which is when the red stems come into their own. It is not a choice for year-round privacy.

How do I keep the stems bright red?

The brightest colour is on young stems. Once the hedge is established, cut a third of the oldest stems to the base each spring so new red growth keeps coming.

Can I mix it with other Dogwoods?

Yes. Planted alternately with Yellow Stemmed Dogwood it gives a striking red and yellow winter hedge.
