Choosing your Osmanthus hedge plants

Our Osmanthus range is one plant, Osmanthus × burkwoodii, offered in different starting heights. The choice is how much height to buy now, how many plants you need and how long you are happy to wait for the hedge to fill out.

Which starting height should I choose?

40–60cm: the smaller starting option for a hedge you are happy to grow on. Allow four plants per metre when comparing the cost of the full hedge.

60–80cm: a middle option for more height at planting without choosing the tallest grade. Allow three plants per metre.

80–100cm: the tallest grade in this range, useful where initial height matters. Allow three plants per metre, but remember that separate plants still need time to join into a continuous screen.

These recommendations are for our listed sizes in a single row. Measure spacing from the centre of one plant to the next. For a 10m hedge, allow 40 of the 40–60cm plants or 30 of either taller grade.

Is Osmanthus right for your garden?

Choose it for evergreen garden divisions, a scented boundary or a low to medium hedge where frequent trimming would be a nuisance. Its slower growth is an advantage for maintenance, but not for creating a tall screen quickly. A sunny or partly shaded position with good drainage suits it best.

01What are Burkwood Osmanthus plants?

Burkwood Osmanthus is the common name for Osmanthus × burkwoodii, the evergreen hybrid in our hedging range. It has small, dark-green leaves and scented white spring flowers. The different heights offered here are sizes of the same plant, not different Osmanthus species or flower colours.

02How quickly does Osmanthus hedging grow, and how tall can I keep it?

Allow roughly 10–20cm of growth a year once established, depending on the site and growing conditions. It is a slower-growing hedge, not a rapid screen. It is commonly maintained at around 1–2m with light trimming; left untrimmed, it can become a broad shrub around 3m tall.

03Will Osmanthus grow in shade or clay soil?

Osmanthus × burkwoodii grows in full sun or partial shade and accepts several soil types, including clay, provided drainage is good. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged. A position protected from persistent cold, drying winds is a sensible choice, particularly while young plants establish.

Pot-grown Osmanthus can be planted throughout the year when the ground is workable and not frozen or waterlogged. Autumn and spring usually make watering easier. Summer planting is possible with dependable watering, but avoid planting during extreme heat or drought.
